Wellington

Home of the vines

Set in a verdant valley in the late-afternoon shade of the Groenberg Mountains, Wellington is home to a variety of wineries and distilleries, ranging from mass-producing cellars and centuries-old estates, to garagistes and pot-still distilleries. Some of the country’s most popular brandies hail from this little hub, along with the region’s delectable fruit.

Wellington’s viticulture dates back to the late 1600s, yet its wine route is one of the youngest. Sip the region’s wines, ranging from sweet and dry bubblies, to full-bodied reds, and crisp whites. For something a bit stronger than wine – Jorgensen’s Distillery produces handmade gin, brandy, and absinthe. Learn about the cellar’s fascinating process where they take their produce from grape to bottle. Sampling fruit is also on the agenda – Wellington’s berry farm cultivates an array of strawberries, youngberries, raspberries, and Cape gooseberries that are ripe for the picking.

Hike the Wellington Wine Walk through the vineyards, olive orchards, fields of buchu, and vine cutting plantations that are found along the foothills of the Hawequa Mountains. Limietberg Nature Reserve’s fynbos-rich terrain offers nine different hiking trails meandering past steep kloofs laced with rivers and clear rock pools. The winding Bainskloof Pass connects Wellington with Worcester and the fruit-producing region of Ceres.
