Within South Africa’s fruit orchard

Named after the Roman goddess of agriculture, the small town of Ceres lies within a bountiful valley, encompassed by the Boland mountains. It is one of South Africa’s most important fruit and juice-producing districts, and only accessible via the narrow and picturesque road easing along the Middelberg and Gydo mountain passes.

The winter months see the surrounding peaks dusted in snow, creating a rare opportunity for skiing and snowboarding, while its rocky outcrops in summer lend themselves to various hiking trails and mountain biking routes that collide with rivers and streams. The Dwars River carves a path through the town, gathering in force and forming rapids and pools ideal for trout fishing and kayaking. The Ceres district extends into the Karoo, home to a multitude of game farms and a prolific amount of birdlife.

The valley sheds its winter coat to don the colours of spring’s fruit trees – peaches, nectarines, apples, apricots, cherries, and pears – and then as summer passes, the coat fades to the burnt colours of autumn. Tour the orchards and fruit-packing houses, sampling the sweet produce of each, and stopover at Klondyke farm to pick your fill. Ceres Zipslide Adventures sees visitors zip line along cables stretched across ravines, offering outstanding views of the surrounding Skurweberg mountains.
