Swimming with the penguins

The quaint coastal village of Simon’s Town is nestled against the mountainside, rising steeply from the ocean on False Bay’s coastline. Its cobbled streets, lined with colourful Victorian buildings, are steeped in history. The town began to flourish from 1679 and is now a bustling seaport and favoured holiday destination.

Simon’s Town is a prominent South African naval base. This is the sight at which the decommissioned SAS Assegaai museum is docked. Guided by former submariners, explore the inside of the South African Navy’s first submarine. Onwards to the Naval Museum, visitors will get a more in-depth look into the navy’s history. Simon’s Town Museum celebrates the vibrant past of the small, maritime port while Jubilee Square boasts the statue of ‘Just Nuisance’ - a dog awarded the title of Able Seaman in the Royal Navy.

The beaches here are not to be missed. Boulders Beach is home to a penguin colony where turquoise waters pale in comparison to the African penguins waddling about and diving from rocks. These birds are notoriously indifferent – don’t be surprised to find them nonchalantly swimming past while you float in shallow waters. Seaworth Beach boasts hidden coves and rock pools while Long Beach, much as the name implies, is excellent for extended strolls.
