Gordons Bay

The picturesque cove of Gordons Bay

Gordons Bay sits at the foot of the chiselled Hottentots Holland mountain range, in the wine-producing Helderberg region, around 50km from Cape Town. The harbour town is all about its waterfront and the veritable feast of water-based activities on offer. Its promenade is lined with fresh seafood restaurants, tiny cafes, and a treasure-trove of cluttered second-hand shops.

The ocean’s waters are warmer than on the Atlantic coast and retain a calm exterior, making them ideal for shallow paddling and swimming. There is nowhere better to enjoy these waters than at Gordons Bay’s Blue Flag status beach, aptly named Bikini Beach. From the white sandy shores, watch the whales breach and nudge their young along the coast. Fishing is a favourite pastime and eager anglers cast their line from the old harbour, which still serves its original purpose of hauling in a daily catch and keeping the boats in tip-top shape.

The Helderberg Wine Route is just around the corner, comprising over 30 different wineries that range from the 300-year-old Vergelegen Wine Estate, to the boutique winery of Morgenster Wine & Olive Estate. On a clear day, the view from the Steenbras Dam stretches all the way to Cape Point.
