Solitaire & Surrounds

Worthwhile stopover when visiting south-west Namibia

Solitaire is a small settlement in central Namibia, close by to the Namib-Naukluft National Park. It is the only halfway point that features a petrol station, post office, and general dealer between Sossusvlei and Walvis Bay, making this town an essential stopover point for visitors self-driving through the country.

There are a number of walking trails in the area while picturesque self-drives complimented by magnificent sunsets can be taken through the Spreetshoogte or Remhoogte passes. The Tropic of Capricorn sign is a popular attraction and photo op that lies just 40km north of the small town. Solitaire also has an air-strip for those wishing to fly-in to the area before beginning their journey.

The area was named Solitaire, referencing its isolated location, by the wife of the original homesteader, Willem Christoffel van Coller. For most of the year Solitaire is a quiet and unassuming but during the tourist season it comes alive with visitors who are making their way around south-western Namibia. The general store offers home-baked goods, groceries, fuel and a tyre repair service. There are several accommodation options ranging from camping sites to lodges to guest farms.
