Capital of southern Namibia, home to unique landscapes

Known as the capital of southern Namibia, Keetmanshoop was originally a mission station before it grew into a larger farming settlement town. A gateway to surrounding scenic and historic attractions, it is also a popular stop en-route for those travelling between South Africa and Namibia.

Retaining remnants of its original German buildings after being founded in the mid-19th century by the Rhenish Mission Society and named after Johan Keetman., The old mission church is now a museum honouring the region’s vibrant history while the Southern Tourism Forum is now based out of the Old Post Office building and readily hands out information on various points of interest in the area.

Two of the most popular sites are located on the farm of Gariganus, 14km north-east of Keetmanshoop: The Quiver Tree Forest is home to trees reaching 7m in height while Giants Playground is an impressive collection of dolerite boulders stacked atop each other and dating back 180 million years. Other points of interest include Gellap Ost Farm, a research station for the Karakul sheep farming industry, and Garas Park, home to quiver trees, aloes and a sculptured garden of natural rock.
