A rustic escape to Helmeringhausen

Helmeringhausen is a settlement made up of little more than a homestead, hotel, and petrol station. This dusty little hamlet stands in the southern part of arid Namibia, conveniently located midway between Sesriem and the Fish River Canyon. Surrounded by burnt orange and red desert sands (and the odd acacia tree), a palpable silence wraps itself around the landscape, promising visitors a rustic escape.

The Agricultural Museum displays an assortment of peculiar old furniture and farming implements, as well as an antique fire engine, all collected from neighbouring properties since 1984. The hotel is surprisingly stylish, with minimalist elegant rooms, and the popular bar and restaurant. Local game is on the menu (as well as on the walls as trophies) and paired with cold beer or a reserve from the wine cellar.

Venture into the heart of the Tiras Mountains for a night among the towering, granite boulders, where ancestral voices can be heard whispering in the wind. Further south you’ll find Sesriem, which stands as the gateway to the petrified dunes of Sossusvlei. The Fish River has been gouging its path through the canyon for thousands of years, creating fascinating rock formations and deep ravines.
