Good stopover towns en-route to tourism hotspots

Located on the main road between Windhoek and Swakopmund, the small town of Karibib in Namibia is ideally situated for an overnight stay and refuelling point for visitors making their way between the capital and much-loved seaside resort. North of Karibib is Omaruru, oozing small-town charm and the hub for surrounding dairy farms and cattle ranches.

Karibib bloomed into a fully-fledged town following the development of the railroad between inland Namibia and the coast, so much so that the town’s iconic railway building has been declared a national monument. There is plenty to see for those who are passing through, including numerous historical buildings. Karibib is also a convenient location to rest for visitors who are making their way to the scenic Erongo Mountain range.

Nestled on the banks of the Omaruru River, Omaruru is an ideal stopover for travellers heading to the Brandberg Mountains, Twyfelfontein and Namibia’s Petrified Forest. The Omaruru Museum is housed in the historically important Rhenish Mission Church on the main street. The town has stayed true to its creative roots showcasing fine products like chocolate, cheese, wine, carvings and art galleries. Paula Cave’s rock art and Etjo Mountain’s ancient dinosaur footprints are nearby.
