Cascading waterfalls on the northern Kunene River

The Epupa Falls has its roots in the Kunene River on the border of Angola and Namibia in an area commonly known as Kaokoland. They are created by a series of cascades that drop a total of 60m over a distance of about 1.5km and at one point reach a total width of about 500m. Epupa, the Herero word for “foam”, is so named for the plumes of spray that encompass the air, created by the falling torrents.

A main attraction for visitors is to travel through the unspoiled environment from Opuwo to Epupa which offers a resplendently scenic drive featuring towering baobabs, wild fig trees and swaying makalani palms. The area around the falls has richly coloured rock walls and tranquil rock pools ideal for swimming in, but be wary of those frequented by crocodiles!

There are a number of activities in the area, some can be done alone, but others will need to be booked through one of the lodges or campsites in the area. Bird watching can be done on foot or by a leisurely boat trip. Guided or unguided hikes around Epupa offer fantastic photographic opportunities and sundowner trips to spectacular lookout points are on offer too. A visit to a Himba settlement will give visitors a peek into their nomadic, tribal lifestyle and photographs may be taken on request.
