Unique National Park protecting local community & wildlife

Bwabwata National Park, sprawled across 610 000ha and extending for 180km between the Kavango River to the west and Kwando River to the east, is known as 'a people's park' as it supports an array of wildlife that share Bwabwata with the local Caprivian people. The park is fiercely committed to ethical tourism, conservation and community upliftment initiatives.

The Caprivian people have long lived in harmony with the land and the animals that they share it with. Bwabwata has ensured that this continues with a number of people calling the park home. The parks steadily increasing wildlife population is another triumph along with the re-introduction of the red lechwe and sitatunga to the park. Other animals to be spotted in the park include elephant, lion, leopard, crocodile, buffalo and wildebeest. Ornithologists will be thrilled with the near 339 bird species recorded in the area.

As with most game parks and reserves, the best time for game-viewing is in the dry summer months, particularly October, when foliage is less dense and animals flock to the Kwando River – one of the remaining perennial water sources in the park. There are a number of community-run campsites within the park and lodges outside of its borders that offer game drives, nature walks and boat safaris in Bwabwata.
