Mombasa

Be mesmerised by multicultural Mombasa

Mombasa is home to beautiful beaches and a dizzyingly diverse history. The city sprawls across an island and on to the mainland which was once entrenched in a game of tug-of-war between the Portuguese empire, Omani sultanate, and native Swahili tribes. With origins as an important trading centre along the Indian Ocean coastline, the city is now Kenya’s second largest and a gateway to Kenya’s north coast and coastal towns such as Malindi & Watamu.

The city is the stuff of legend where sultanates and empires clashed over sand and spices. The end result? A metropolis whose history is left scattered around its cosmopolitan streets and beaches. Visit the Portuguese-built Fort Jesus, stroll around the sprawling markets, sample the steaming brew at local coffee houses, or visit the mosques and Hindu temples dotted around town. Dusk is the perfect time to embark on a dinner cruise by dhow while a post-dinner stroll around Mombasa’s Old Town will have visitors feeling as if they’ve stepped into a different century.

Mombasa’s Moi International Airport is a short drive from the city centre and receives flights from an array of cities around the country and on the continent. Mombasa’s rail, land, and sea transport systems are also well established.
