Malindi & Watamu

Kenya’s tropical beaches and prolific marine reserve

Kenya’s north coast seems worlds apart from the rolling savannahs and acacia woodlands of the Masai Mara National Reserve and other inland parks. Swaying palms leave fronds scattered across the beaches of Malindi & Watamu; where soft sand hides turtle eggs and tropical waters provide underwater sanctuaries for a plethora of sea life. Cruise amid mangrove swamps, dive to the depths of coral reefs or head deep-sea for a day of game-fishing.

The Watamu Marine National Park boasts over 110 species of coral and visitors such as leatherback turtles, whale sharks, and manta rays. The Arubuko Sokoke forest is home to wandering elephants while the Marafa Depression reveals an eerie gorge forged by mother nature herself. North of Watamu, the ghost town of Gedi is slowly being reclaimed by surrounding forest after having being abandoned centuries ago.

Mombasais largely considered the gateway to Kenya’s north coast thanks to its airport and relative proximity to Malindi (two hours by road). However, visitors can also fly straight to Malindi by making use of its airport that receives flights from Nairobi and Mombasa . The coastal hubs of Malindi and Watamu are dotted with resorts eager to welcome visitors to their tropical wonderland.
