Walk hand-in-hand with the Maasai

Amboseli National Park rests so finely on the border line between Kenyaand Tanzania, that Mount Kilimanjaro’s snow-capped peaks can be seen rising out of the earth from the vantage point of this Kenyan park. The area is populated by local Maasai people, who have been walking the ancient trails since they were young, and who make up more than half of the guides that show guests their expansive backyard at Tortilis Camp.

The park is without fencing to indicate boundaries, leaving the wildlife to wander freely between the park and private lands. As a result, conservation efforts are implemented by the community at large and responsible wildlife-based tourism is becoming increasingly recognised. Tortilis Camp pays a fixed rent to Maasai landowners in the area in order to aid in the preservation of a 12,000ha wildlife corridor, Kitirua Conservancy that connects Amboseli to Tanzania. In turn, the Maasai people take guests at Tortilis on guided tours through Kitirua, where their intimate wealth of knowledge about the land and its animals can be showcased. Expect to see a few of the elephants who call this area home, their population numbers thought to be well over 1000.

From a distance, Mount Kilimanjaro keeps watch over the 16 comfortably stylish tents that make up the camp at Tortilis, available with either twin or double beds. All tents feature an en-suite bathroom and veranda offering magnificent views of the mountain. There is a family tent available, which can accommodate a group of four and shares a swimming pool with the Private House, for those that don’t feel camping is for them. Activities available at the camp include game drives, guided walks, spa treatments and cultural visits and interactions with the Maasai.
