Stargazing and treetop canopy walks in Laikipia

Laikipia is a terrain of tall grasslands and rocky outcrops which lead and merge into verdant forests at the foothills of Mount Kenya. It supports the largest density of wildlife in the country after the Masai Mara National Reserve – no mean feat! Massive herds of black rhino graze alongside indomitable elephant troops and endangered Grevy’s zebra. Settled around the equator, this richly biodiverse domain is not to be missed.

Swing bridges meander through treetop canopies in the Ngare Ndare forest while its woodland floor is littered with rudimentary paths meandering past 200-year-old cedar trees. Glistening natural pools are adorned with endless ripples from flowing waterfalls while the outlying grassland hides shy leopard, sturdy buffalo, and wandering elephants. Nightfall shows off the glittering night sky, best observed from camping sites, star beds, and evening safaris.

Nanyuki and Nyahururu serve as the county’s major urban hubs. Both can be reached by well-tarred roads or Nanyuki’s airport which is served by light aircraft. Additionally, have your photo taken at exactly 0 degrees latitude in Nanyuki where the equator cuts through the town. The sprawling vegetation and vibrant birdlife of Kenya’s rainy season are a bird-lover and photographer’s dream while the country’s wildlife forms competitive clusters around water sources during the dry season.
