Wedged in between the Highlands Meander and the Kruger National Park is The Panorama Route. The area abounds with breathtaking views and natural wonders along the eastern slopes of the escarpment. There is God's Window and the world's third largest and biggest green canyon, the Blyde River Canyon. There are also the astonishing Bourke's Luck Potholes and the Three Rondawels.
The towns of Lydenburg and White River are gateways to the route which will take you through the quaint and historic towns of Pilgrim's Rest (one of our favourite places in South Africa), a living museum dating back to the heydays of the gold rush, as well as Sabie, Graskop, Malelane, Nelspruit, White River, Hazyview, Hoedspruit and Dullstroom.
Nature enthusiasts will discover cascading waterfalls while adrenaline junkies can get their next rush by bungee jumping, white water rafting or tackling one of the rigorous 4x4 trails. Gentler pursuits include hot air ballooning, walking trails and for those averse to buying lottery tickets, you might want to try your hand at gold panning.
Mist shrouded waterfalls, the verdant splendour of Blyde River Canyon, winter snows in Lydenburg, steamy primeval forests, caves that housed troglodytes for thousands of years and a floral kaleidoscope are just some of Mpumalanga's natural wonders.
