Game drives, bush walks and elephant-back safaris (yes, we’re serious!) are just a 45-minute drive away from the Eastgate Airport in Hoedspruit. The Big 5 (among others) roam across the riverine forest along the Kapama River and the vast savannah grasslands of the Kapama Game Reserve which is flanked by the imposing Drakensberg Mountains and the eminent Kruger National Park.
This African Eden sprawls across 13,000 hectares of land and - aside from the Big 5 - Kapama is also home to 350 bird species and an additional 40 mammals. Visitors are guaranteed plenty wildlife sightings as large herds of buffalo, antelope, and giraffe roam the plains – while the reserve’s predators lurk not too far behind. An interactive experience with habituated elephants is also offered: hitch a ride with them across the landscape and later observing them being ‘tucked in’ at night by their loving handlers.
Photography enthusiasts will be eager to enjoy a photographic safari while other pastimes include romantic sleep-outs under the stars, hot-air balloons offering terrific views of the Kruger National Park and the Drakensberg, and rejuvenating treatments at the reserve’s wellness centre. Kapama offers complimentary transfers for guests between Eastgate Airport in Hoedspruit and the lodges in the reserve.
