Rhino Africa wins African Excellence Award for Outstanding PR and Communications

Rhino Africa wins African Excellence Award

May 2017 - The distinguished African Excellence Awards, which honours international achievements in communications and HR, has crowned a Rhino Africa HR campaign as the best in its category. The awards are a branch of the worldwide Excellence Awards brand, being rolled out in Africa, Asia-Pacific, Europe, Latin America and North America. Entries were open to companies, consultancies, associations, institutions, universities and NGOs. The awards received over 2,500 applications from around the globe and Rhino Africa won in the “HR Tool” category, which was a fusion of three smaller categories, “Employer Video”, “Career Event”, and “Career Website”. Rhino Africa won the award for their internal year-end video that was created to galvanise the team and create excitement for their vision for the future.

“In order to invigorate the travel industry, we created an out-the-box, tongue-in-cheek video to showcase our 2020 vision and the quirky characteristics that make Rhino Africa unique,” Lawrence van der Merwe, Rhino Africa’s Head Recruiter, explains. “In addition, the company was going through a period of rapid growth and we wanted to unite our team and share a strong vision for the future.” Rhino Africa’s 2020 video featured the employees of Rhino Africa, as they are the cornerstone of the company’s success and the key to the future.

“Internally, the video was an immense success and created a much stronger sense of purpose among our employees and ignited a energetic focus on the company’s mission going forward. Externally, the video showcased that Rhino Africa is a fun, lively and inspiring place to work - attracting new employees. The video was a major motivation for new employee applications, which we discovered from the company's recruiting survey. We send it to all new recruits and we receive such good feedback that it encouraged us to enter the video into the awards,” van der Merwe said.

The video was also noticed and highly commended within the travel industry, once again distinguishing Rhino Africa as a pioneer and innovative thinker. The success of the video in uniting the Rhino Africa team encouraged Rhino Africa to follow up the next year with an equally unique but completely different type of video, a rewording of Billy Joel’s We Didn’t Start The Fire that was a Christmas card to their industry partners and friends.

Other companies recognised by the awards were, among others, Nike, Emirates, Unilever, Standard Bank, Intel, Anglo American and Sanlam. The winners of the second African Excellence Awards will be honoured during an intimate dinner in Johannesburg on 29 June 2017.
