Vilanculos

Your gateway to Mozambique’s magical islands

Although it is widely touted as the gateway to the Bazaruto Archipelago, Vilanculos is far more than just stopover spot for those en route to an island escape. This coastal village offers adventures and experiences for water babies and landlubbers alike.

Vilanculos is a mecca for water sports, and thrill-seekers are spoilt for choice with activities ranging from snorkelling to kite-surfing. No trip to Vilanculos is complete without an ocean safari: hop on a traditional dhow and go in search of sharks, dolphins, and even the endangered dugong that inhabits the town’s warm waters. Those who’d prefer to stay on dry land, however, can go for gallop on a horseback safari along the powder-white beach. The village of Vilanculos is small enough to explore on foot, and its streets are alive with activity. Sip on local beer at the barracas (bars), go ‘window-shopping’ for trinkets at the open-air Mercado Municipal, or head to the fisherman’s market for freshly-caught prawns and calamari.

Getting to this village is a cinch: Vilanculos International Airport lies on the outskirts of town, and serves daily flights to and from Maputo International Airport, O.R. Tambo International, and Swaziland. Charter flights from South Africa and Zimbabwe are also possible.
