Pomene Bay

Swaying palms and sandy beaches

Pomene Bay sits halfway between Inhambane and Vilanculos, in the southern parts of Mozambique. This remote patch along the coast is marked by its old coconut plantations and pristine beach. Its striking estuarine setting invites travellers to dive beneath the turquoise waters and delve into the diverse marine life and spectacular coral reefs.

The Pomene National Reserve is a tapestry of dunes, stretching savannahs, thick-rooted mangroves, and green marshes. Wildebeest trek across the wheat-coloured grasses, while the shy grey duiker and steenbok find sanctuary in the forested dunes. Impala, wild boar, baboon and monkey make an appearance, as well as the lagoon’s turtles, and the near-extinct dugong. The waters are teeming with big-game fish, inviting avid anglers to challenge tuna and marlin to a tug of war.

Pomene’s beach is a white stretch of sand, arching towards its rusted lighthouse. The clear waters offer some of the best diving along the coast, with depths varying between 8 and 30m. Experience the rich marine life and colourful reefs, which weave through the coral formations beside curious fish. The area and its watery setting attract numerous bird species from long-feathered egret to the pink flamingo.
