Rusinga Island Lodge is a gem-quality hideaway on Lake Victoria in western Kenya. Its gentle charm, supreme luxury and total seclusion offer a tranquil retreat from the bump and grind of an African safari. Rusinga Island Lodge has seven rooms – one of which is a family suite – made of local stone, timber and thatch. Each one looks out over the the second largest lake in the world and easily the most spectacular sunsets in Kenya. En suite bathrooms are luxurious with a permanent supply of hot water, enormous showers and double vanities; beds are oversized and sumptuous; and each chalet has a private verandah perfect for idling away the beautiful days.
The living area follows the chalets' elegant suit with a breezy and casual open-sided thatched building with a large terrace and dining area, a lazy lounge and a jetty that hovers over the lake and provides the setting for the most romantic dinners imaginable. A new addition is a fully-equipped spa and wellness centre complete with jacuzzi and a range of exciting treatments. Organic fruit, vegetables and herbs are grown with pride on the island; fish is plucked directly from the lake and prepared in exciting ways; and all the breads, pastries and cakes are made by the Rusinga Island Lodge chefs.
The choice is yours: waft like the cool lake breeze between your private chalet, the spa, the lodge's private beach and the casual living area. Or tear around on a ski boat, go fishing, birdwatching, game viewing and enjoy the scenery. The lodge also offers game viewing in the remarkable Ruma National Park, which is home to the largest Kenyan population of the magnificent roan antelope and other rare East Africa wildlife including Jackson’s hartebeest, Rothchild’s giraffe, oribi, Bohor Reedbuck, topi and leopard.
