Finch Hattons

The golden era of the safari continues

At the foot of the Chyulu Hills rests the friendly luxury tented lodge of Finch Hattons. At Finch Hattons the wildlife is literally on your doorstep, as the camp is unfenced, so the animals come and go as they please. Not to worry though if you're worried about stepping on a lions tail in the dark, after dinner you will be escorted back to your tent by armed askaris (traditional Masai warriors).

Your tent is equipped with deluxe beds and all the amenities of a room in a five star hotel, including a supply of electricity, a fully stocked mini-bar, en-suite toilet, wash basin and generous slate walled shower room, complete with hot and cold running water. All tents have panoramic views of the surrounding springs and forests, large deck balconies with chairs, tables and daybed.

The main lodge comprises of a dining hall, lounge/bar and the terrace, where breakfast is served overlooking the hippo pool against the backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro. Here you will enjoy excellent cuisine with top quality service. Tables are decked with silverware, cut crystal and porcelain to service your five-course dinner in style. After a long day on safari, what better way to end the day than a six course meal in the company of friends or family.

The Honorable Denys George Finch Hatton was a big-game hunter, and the lover of Karen Blixen (also known by her pen name as Isak Dinesen), who wrote about him in her autobiographical book Out of Africa first published in 1937 and later turned into the classic film. In the book, his name is hyphenated Finch-Hatton. He devoted his life to exploring the wild in style. In his camp, dinner was served on fine china with silver and crystal, while the gentle strains of Mozart played in the background. He died in a plane crash in 1931, but in the camp that shares his name, his legacy loves on.
