Frequently Asked Questions

We've taken the liberty to answer everything you may need to know about visiting Amboseli National Park

Amboseli National Park is famous for its large elephant herds and views of Mount Kilimanjaro. It’s also known for long-running elephant research, wetlands, open plains, birdlife and the Maasai communities of the wider Amboseli ecosystem.

Yes. Mount Kilimanjaro can be seen from Amboseli National Park even though it is in Tanzania.

The open plains give you some of the most recognisable views of Africa’s highest mountain, particularly when elephants happen to cross the foreground.

Early morning is the time we would prioritise, before clouds have had too much opportunity to interfere.

No, Amboseli National Park is not a full Big 5 destination. Elephant, buffalo and lion are regularly seen, while leopard are much harder to find. Rhino are not found inside the national park itself, although black rhino occur elsewhere in the wider ecosystem.

If seeing all of the Big 5 matters to you, pair Amboseli with another Kenyan safari region. There is no need to ask one park to do everything.

Choose the Maasai Mara National Reserve for predators, vast plains and the Great Migration, and Amboseli for elephants and Mount Kilimanjaro views.

In practice, we much prefer combining them. The Mara deserves more time for the scale and variety of its wildlife viewing, while two or three nights in Amboseli gives you a completely different setting and some of Kenya’s strongest elephant encounters.

If you only have time for one, choose according to what you most want to experience rather than whichever park someone has declared “better”.

Amboseli supports elephant, lion, cheetah, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, spotted hyena, hippo and numerous antelope species.

Its open plains and wetland areas also make wildlife relatively easy to spot, while over 400 bird species have been recorded in the park.

Yes. Amboseli has more than 400 recorded bird species including the endangered secretary bird and is particularly rewarding around its swamps and seasonal lake basin.

Open plains and acacia woodland bring another set of species into view, including raptors and large terrestrial birds.

It’s entirely possible to arrive interested only in elephants and leave knowing considerably more about birds than you intended.

No. Lake Amboseli is a seasonal lake basin and can remain largely dry for long periods. The permanent swamps elsewhere in the park are far more reliable sources of water for wildlife. After sufficient rain, however, water can spread across the basin and attract large numbers of birds, including flamingos.

Not as a standard activity inside Amboseli National Park, where guests must remain on designated roads and only leave vehicles in approved areas.

Walking safaris are available in some of the private and community conservancies surrounding the park, depending on where you stay.

Yes. Amboseli works particularly well for families because the open terrain makes wildlife relatively easy to spot and a two-to-three-night stay fits neatly into a wider Kenya itinerary.

Choose the lodge according to your children’s ages, room configuration and the activities you want to include. Walking safaris and other conservancy activities may have minimum age restrictions.
