Renee's Okavango Delta Safari

Luxury fly-in safari on land and water

Renee’s favourite tour takes you deep into the heart of Botswana: the Okavango Delta and Moremi Region. And that’s where you stay, exploring this Edenic region, for eight days of luxury lodges and amazing game viewing. Here’s what Renee says of her favourite Okavango Delta safari.

You might think the Okavango Delta is the same as any other wildlife destination in Africa. It is not. Having had the privilege of visiting this vast oasis in Botswana, no words can describe the beauty the Okavango Delta has to offer. Imagine yourself gliding through the channels in a mokoro (a dug-out wooden canoe) to view birds, hippos, elephants, buffalo, lechwe and other water-loving antelope; imagine guided walking safaris through pristine African bush; imagine 4x4 game drives through game-packed floodplains and woodlands; imagine ending your day on a sunset boat cruise, sipping a refreshing cocktail before feasting on a delicious dinner beneath the stars while the land around stirs to its nocturnal life.

Creating a trip to the Delta can vary according to what your interests are, however, it’s important that your time spent in the Delta is combined with both water and land activities.

Starting your trip, is a two-night stay at the charming Kwetsani Camp with only five luxury rooms ideal for honeymooners, a couples retreat or a family getaway. Situated in the Jao Concession, well-known for its tranquillity, intimacy and a “tree house” experience, Kwetsani will offer you romance with a capital “R”. In high water season (July– September) activities are all water-based, the Delta is a birders’ paradise and the mokoro game viewing activity between the water channels makes this an ideal experience for tranquillity and relaxation, taking in the beauty of the scenery surrounding you.

Moving on from a water-based camp in peak season to a land and water camp – Little Vumbura Camp – is a must-do-at-least-once-in-a-lifetime experience. This lodge has its own personality with six beautiful tented rooms in a remote and untouched area of the Delta. Situated in the private Vumbura Concession, the lodge offers a diverse array of game and wildlife allowing for fantastic buffalo and lion sightings. High water season at Little Vumbura offers water- and land-based game viewing activities, providing you with a choice as to what you would like to experience on that day. The lodge terrain in peak season is lush, and sitting on your deck at your rooms overlooking the plains is a spectacular calming experience.

And then it’s on to my personal favourite: Camp Savuti in the Linyanti Wetlands between the Okavango Delta and Chobe. Well known for its amazing location, Savuti Camp has stolen my heart and the Linyanti Wetlands area is famous for its exceptional game viewing. Packs of the very rare wild dog favour the lush broad plains as do elephants, buffalos, lions, general plains game and hundreds of birds. If you go to only one place on earth for a safari make it Savuti Camp.

All the safari lodges in this tour are in vast private concessions guaranteeing you an exclusive experience both during your game viewing activities and back home at your luxurious accommodation. Your overall stay and experience will be captured by one word: astounding.
