Letaka Northern Highlights Safari

A popular mobile safari in wild Botswana

Experience the best of what Botswana has to offer with the family-run Letaka's Mobile Tented Safaris - the only of its kind in Botswana that offers walking safaris with trained guides from the Okavango Guide School. You'll get right up close to nature with their ground-level wilderness style tents. Letaka is child-friendly and families are welcome to enjoy the bush together. The highlights of this trip include the Moremi Game Reserve and exploring the fringes of the Okavango Delta by mokoro. You will also visit the Khwai Concession Area and Chobe National Park, with a boat cruise along the Chobe River.

Safety on mokoro trips is of ultimate importance and protective measures are taken to ensure your safety, so there is no need to worry - just sit back and enjoy the view of the wildlife passing by. Letaka is the only camp that offers mokoro trips with a second boat following behind on the lookout for wild animals. In season, you will get to view the Okavango Delta from a unique perspective aboard a charter flight.

On moving days the camp staff travel ahead to ensure that the mobile camp is fully set up and that a warm welcome awaits you as you arrive at each destination.

You will spend the first three nights in the Xakanaxa region where you will get to explore the surrounding wilderness on morning and afternoon game drives. You'll spot large breeding herds of African elephant, buffalo and lechwe, prides of lion, hippos and a variety of birds. Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner

Day 4-7: Letaka Tented Camp, Khwai Community Area

The next morning after breakfast you will take a slow drive through Moremi Game Reserve, north-east towards the Khwai Community Area. During the day the journey will pass the Khwai river and floodplains into the mopane veld and the woodlands that make Khwai one of the most scenic areas of the Okavango. You will stop at the magnificent Dombo Hippo Pools to enjoy the scenery and the antics of the resident hippo. The Khwai river has an unusually high density of hippo as well as some huge crocodile and elephants that come to drink at teh water. Leopard, cheetah, serval, wild dog and lion are common predators along this route, as well as giraffe, Burchell’s zebra, tessebe and red lechwe with roan and sable antelope being less common residents. Look out for birds such as African Hawk-Eagle, Tawny Eagle and Gabar Goshawk.

You will overnight at an exclusive campsite in the community area, exploring the Khwai floodplains on mokoro trips, walking safaris and game drives both during the day and at night. Exploring after dark with spotlights offers you an opportunity to experience some of the nocturnal animals that are rarely encountered during the day. These activities are conducted outside the Moremi Game Reserve in the Khwai area.

Day 7-10:
Letaka Tented Camp, Chobe National Park

You will head further north en-route to Chobe National Park, where you will spend the following three nights camping in an exclusive wilderness campsite in the Savuti region. You will cross the Magwikwe Sand-ridge that formed the shoreline for this massive inland sea. The winding track through this deep sand makes for interesting travel in the early summer! You will pass through excellent lion and cheetah country as well as spot plenty elephant especially towards the end of the drive. This is also a birder’s paradise as well as home to prides of lion that have learned over the years how to hunt elephant - which are supposedly above predation. In the wet season it is not unusual to have the wild dog hunting here in Savuti. As well as game drives, go on exciting Bushman Painting Walks.

Day 10: Savuti to Chobe River

On the final day of your mobile tented safari you will leave Savuti early to travel along the Chobe River, arriving in Kasane where we you will stop for a picnic lunch. After lunch go on an afternoon boat cruise along the Chobe River where you can see streams of elephants crossing the channel.

We recommend that you spend a night or two in Kasane at Chobe Safari Lodge or two nights in Livingstone at Taita Falcon Lodge, before heading off home or onto other travels.
