Justine's Amazing African Safari

The best of Zimbabwe and Botswana

Apart from an essential interlude exploring one of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World, Justine's Amazing African Safari takes you far away from people and deep into the African bush as you visit three magnificent game parks each with striking contrasts from each other.

Starting off in Hwange National Park - home of African wild dogs, rhino and all the rest - you then spend a few days in Victoria Falls. A short transfer takes you to the Chobe River and then it’s on to the Okavango Delta. You will be hard pressed to pick a highlight.

This 13-day tour is well suited to travellers who have been to Cape Town or Kruger Park already and who want to experience the African bush way off the beaten track. The safari lodges and hotels I have chosen are amongst my favourites as they offer comfortable accommodation, great locations, good food and personal service - all the elements for an enjoyable and relaxing stay.

The tour starts and ends in Johannesburg and includes return flights from Johannesburg to Victoria Falls, all transfers, accommodation and all your sight-seeing and safari activities.

Day 1 - 4: The Hide Safari Camp, Hwange National Park

Fly from Johannesburg to Victoria Falls International Airport and transfer directly to Hwange National Park about two and a half hours from the airport.

Enjoy an untamed safari in Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe’s largest game park and home to all the country’s protected animals including what is thought to be one of the largest populations of African wild dog. A place contrasting landscape and season, Hwange is not yet very well known, meaning now is the time to visit before it becomes popular!

Meals: full board including local drinks

Day 4 - 7: Ilala Lodge, Victoria Falls

Transfer back to Victoria Falls for three nights at this amazing place. In addition to visiting the falls themselves a short walk from the hotel, there are many optional activities in and around the Victoria Falls, which at its fullest in June, is the largest single curtain of falling water in the world. Besides viewing the majestic falls and rainforest, I have included three activities:

  • Relaxing sunset cruise on the Zambezi River
  • Half-day interaction and ride with orphaned elephants
  • Scenic helicopter flight over Victoria Falls (aptly known as the flight of angels!)

Meals: breakfast

Day 7 - 9: Chobe Game Lodge, Chobe

Transfer by road from Zimbabwe into Botswana (about two hours) to Chobe National Park. Experience a larger-than-life safari in Chobe, home to the largest single concentration of elephants in Africa. For the love of unspoilt Africa, Chobe will capture the magnificence and very real essence of Botswana’s natural landscapes and wildlife heritage.

Meals: full board including local drinks

Day 9 - 12: Gunn's Camp, Okavango Delta and Moremi Region

Transfer by road to Kasane Airport (15 minutes) and board a short shuttle flight into the Okavango Delta.

As a wild, unspoilt and scenic destination, the Okavango Delta must be one of Africa’s highlights. The grand finale of your amazing holiday is an intimate water-based Delta safari. Relax and enjoy game viewing and bird watching while gliding through the waterways in a mokoro and special delta motorboats. Instead of game drives, your ranger will lead you on island bush walks to encounter game without the confines of a vehicle.

Meals: full board including local drinks

Day 12 - 13: Peermont Metcourt Suites Hotel, Johannesburg

Transfer by air to Maun and connect with your regional flight to Johannesburg where you can either fly out directly if your itinerary allows or stay overnight in this vibrant city. The Peermont Metcourt Suites are a safe five-minute transfer from Johannesburg International Airport so you can either relax at the resort hotel or explore Johannesburg’s many attractions.

Meals: breakfast

Day 13: Departure

Transfer back to the airport and catch your flight home after one truly amazing African safari.
