The Okavango Delta is an aquatic paradise spread across weaving waterways bordered by riverine forests, perennial swamplands, and floodplains. On drier land, tall-grass savannahs are navigated by landmarks of towering baobabs and shady acacia trees while dense mopane woodlands lie scattered across parts of the landscape. The wet and dry habitats of the delta concessions create an area of unique biodiversity.
Bloats of hippos laze about the maze of waterways, sharing their watery domain with crocodiles while various antelope and herds of elephant line the water’s edge. Zebra, giraffe and buffalo roam across the savannahs, with the delta’s cheetah, hyena, or lion population lurking not too far behind. Leopards are known to favour the woodlands, between the branches of sausage trees and lying in wait.
Most of the concession areas allow morning and evening game drives, guided walks, and safari by mokoro or speedboat. Some lodges based directly on the banks of the delta will only offer water safaris while experiences such as safari on horseback and elephant-back are available in some parts. Fishing is proving increasingly popular with visitors who are taking to the waters in the hopes of catching bream, pike, or tiger fish.
