On the 9 June 2016, the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared the end of the most recent outbreak of the Ebola virus disease in Liberia. This is the last of three countries affected as Sierra Leone declared the end of Ebola human-to-human transmission on 17 March 2016, and Guinea did the same on 1 June 2016.
The epidemic first flared up in West Africa in 2014. The Director-General of the WHO terminated the outbreak’s Public Health Emergency of International Concern status in March 2016. However, the WHO has urged all three countries to keep alert for any new infections as preventing any future outbreaks requires constant vigilance.
