Planet Baobab

While not quite another planet, there is something otherworldly about the lunar landscape of Botswana’s Makgadikgadi Pans and its bizarre looking baobabs. It is in this region that you could land at Planet Baobab, a traditional Bakalanga village in the baobab capital of the world with trees averaging 4,000 years old.

A range of guided day trips and overnight experiences lead visitors from meerkats and fossils in Nxai Pan to tours of the local village and cattle post. The dry season lends itself to quad biking adventure across the pans and sleepouts beneath the stars, while the wet season sees thousands of zebra and wildebeest participating in one of Africa’s lesser-known migrations. 

To get here simply follow the snout of the giant aardvark erected roadside. This unique character continues to the accommodation comprising of twin and family Bakalanga Huts as well as twin Baobab Huts with thatch rooves, mud walls, en-suite bathrooms and mosquito nets. Public and overland campsites are also available with communal ablution blocks. Stay refreshed with a swim in the largest pool in the Kalahari or with a cold beer from the bar.
