Meet Helen Kirby

Today we chat to our travel consultant, Helen. She used to sing in a band but 14 years ago she decided to take on a career in Tourism. Find out more about her in our Meet The Team section online.

1. What do you love most about your job? I’ve been in the industry for more than 14 years and since being with Rhino Africa I love the fact I can deal directly with my clients. You get to form a very special relationship with all of them. I love being able to start an itinerary from scratch and make it into somebody’s dream holiday! There’s nothing better.
2. What are your top 3 destinations you have visited in Africa? Sabi Sand, Chobe National Park and KwaZulu Natal.
3. What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever eaten on your travels? I’m not the most daring when it comes to food but I have tried a Mopani worm while having dinner at the Boma in Victoria Falls last September.
4. What is your most memorable safari moment? Having a lioness walk past the bar area before dinner at Motswari Game Lodge in the Timbavati. What an incredible experience.
5. What is the one thing you have to take with you on every trip? Definitely my lip balm. The air is very dry on safari and it’s one thing I never travel without.
6. Where in the World do you still want to travel to? There are many places in Africa I’d still like to see – probably the Migration in East Africa and I definitely want to still go to South America. So much to see, so little time.
7. If you could go on a dream safari with anyone at all, who would it be and why? Fictional/Real; Dead/Alive. I would pick my late Dad. He loved the bush but I was too young to enjoy it with him. I feel very close to him when I’m on safari and only wish he was there with me.
8. What is your favourite (city/beach) hotel that you always recommend to clients travelling to Africa? Cape Grace in Cape Town. I spent my wedding night there years back so it holds wonderful memories for me, not to mention just how fabulous it is.
9. What is your favourite safari lodge that you always recommend to clients travelling to Africa? Londolozi and I love Nottens Bush Camp for a real, authentic safari. It is family-run and the hosts are just incredible.
10. Where is your favourite place to eat in Cape Town?  Tough one as there are so many, but Mr Chans in Sea Point is fabulous if you like Chinese food. The Test Kitchen is also incredible for one of those special event dinners!
