Close to some pristine beaches and at the start of the Garden Route, Kariega offers malaria-free big game safaris and a spectacular landscape.
The reserve covers 6,000 hectares and has two rivers – Bushmans and Kariega – that meander in silence towards the Indian Ocean. Wildlife is diverse and abundant with the species list every bit as impressive as some of the more famous reserves up north: elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino, hippo, hyena, giraffe, zebra, eland, wildebeest, waterbuck and several smaller species of antelope.
The rivers attract a splendid array of birds and the gently undulating landscape, dotted with flat-topped acacias and whispering blonde grass, is picture-postcard stuff. The reserve has three timber and thatch lodges that make the most of their beautiful surrounds.
Kariega Lodge is the original lodge and has a casual, family-friendly atmosphere;
Kariega River Lodge is on the Bushmans River and offers luxury and tranquillity;
Kariega Ukhozi River Lodge is the flagship all-suite lodge with private plunge pools and superior luxury and an intimate atmosphere. Kariega Game Reserve is fifteen minutes from the Eastern Cape's renowned beaches and 80km from Port Elizabeth making it an excellent safari option that combines well with a Cape Town or Garden Route holiday.
