Kariega Game Reserve covers 9,000 hectares and has two rivers – Bushmans and Kariega – that meander in silence towards the Indian Ocean. Wildlife is diverse and abundant with the species list every bit as impressive as some of the more famous reserves up north: elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino, hippo, hyena, giraffe, zebra, eland, wildebeest, waterbuck and some smaller species of antelope.
The reserve is fifteen minutes from the Eastern Cape's renowned beaches and 80km from Port Elizabeth making it an excellent safari option that combines well with a Cape Town or Garden Route trip.

The rivers attract a splendid array of birds and the gently undulating landscape, dotted with flat-topped acacias and whispering blonde grass, is picture-postcard stuff. The reserve has three timber and thatch lodges that make the most of their beautiful surrounds.
Kariega Lodge is the original lodge and has a casual, family-friendly atmosphere;
Kariega River Lodge is on the Bushmans River and offers luxury and tranquillity;
Kariega Ukhozi Lodge is the flagship all-suite lodge with private plunge pools and superior luxury and an intimate atmosphere.
The reserve is split in two distinct areas. The first area is dedicated to general game and birdlife, and it is in this area that the experienced Game Rangers offer game walks, mountain biking, canoeing, sunset cruises, and swimming in the Kariega or Bushmans River. The second area is newer and it is here that you can view the Big Five from the safety of the open vehicles. Spot lion and leopard roaming for prey or elephant, rhino and buffalo bludgeoning their way through the bush. In the surrounding area you can enjoy golfing on superb courses or take a trip to the golden beaches of Kenton-On-Sea.
