Lake Mburo National Park

Swift safari stop-over

Although it only spans across 26,000ha of land, visitors should not be fooled by Lake Mburo National Park’s size. Wooded grassland morphs into rocky cliffs and forested gorges, while the park’s five lakes, surrounded by riparian forest and swampy bends, connect to a larger 50km-long wetland system. Its small size, plethora of wildlife, and convenient location make Lake Mburo National Park the perfect stopover for travellers moving between Kampala and Uganda’s western national parks.

Lake Mburo National Park’s wetland area draws 300-strong hippo pods, crocodiles, and parched plains game; while the riparian and tropical Rubanga forest attract over 350 different species of bird including the African finfoot and red-faced barbet. This is the only place in Uganda that visitors will be able to see impala and zebra and, although elusive, lion and leopard also call the park home.

Visitors to Lake Mburo can enjoy game drives, boat trips, nature hikes across the wooded savannah and in the Rubanga forest, horseback riding and quad biking along trails, and visits to the Ankole Cultural Centre run by the local Banyankole community. The park has a camping ground, permanent tent facilities, and one luxury tented camp within its borders.
