Matemwe Lodge is adjacent to one of the best stretches of beach on the east coast, in an ideal locaiton on the tropical island of Zanzibar. It is situated on an outcrop overlooking a shallow coral fringed lagoon on the quieter northeast coast of Zanzibar.
The lodge has plenty on offer, including superb diving and snorkeling off the renowned Mnembe Atoll. Go fishing with the locals, join in on a game of beach football or get a sense of village life on a walking tour of the area.
It's small and intimate, affording you privacy, which offering comfortable, chic accommodation and an authentic feeling of island life. It consists of 12 bungalows built from local materials, surrounded by beautiful gardens. Each spacious suite has a private veranda with a hammock and sofa and expansive views of the Indian Ocean. The large bathrooms have a deep bathtub and walk-in shower and all beds are enclosed by mosquito nets.
Enjoy fresh seafood in the open-air restaurant, which sits just above the sea and has a tranquil lounge area with views of the palm fringed beach and dhows. All produce is bought daily from local markets. Lunch is a buffet offering a delicious mix of African and European flavours. Dinner offers a choice of main courses with fish, meat and vegetarian options.
Matemwe has a multi-level swimming pool surrounded with lounge chairs overlooking the ocean. Freshly mixed cocktails are served at the poolside bar. Add massages and down time in your hammock and you'll never want to leave. It really is an island paradise here, and definitely a photograher's paradise, with fleets of traditional wooden sailing boats passing by. The lodge is a daily stop for the fishermen who sell fresh crab, lobster and fish to Matemwe for lunches and dinners.
