The East Coast of Zanzibar Island (Unguja) is best known for its miles upon miles of powder-white beaches. If it's a perfect beach that defines your dream holiday, then you are in for a treat. Coconut palm trees sway gentle as the wind whispers through their leaves, turquoise waters lap the sand ever so gently and barefoot prints mar the otherwise perfect surface. Until high tide washes them away that is. The best beaches include those at Bwejuu, Paje and Jambiani although the one at Paje is reputed to be the most beautiful.
A little less built up than the equally beautiful North Coast, the East Coast is more secluded and peaceful. However there are several large resorts so don't expect to have the beach all to yourself. Click here to see our East Coast Accommodation.
Because the beaches are so wide and slope so little, when the tide is out it can be a fair walk to the water, so it is advisable to pick a lodge that has its own swimming pool. The locals around here make a living by fishing as well as cultivating and drying seaweed. Some of the more enterprising locals will invite you into their home to observe their traditional way of life and perhaps share a traditional meal - all for a fee of course. The experience is unique and fascinating. Of course there are also the usual array of water based activities to partake in, the snorkeling is spectacular and the diving even more so.
NB: Getting to the East Coast is pretty simple. Most tourists tend to stay in and around the fishing villages of Paje and Bwejuu. They are both about 50km from Stone Town and a pleasant one-hour drive.
