Tarangire National Park is certainly not the most famous Tanzanian Safari destination but it is one of the best! Situated south-west of Arusha it is easier to access than Ngorongoro and the Serengeti and offers a far more exclusive experience away from the crowds.
The national park runs along the Tarangire River, which is an important source of water for animals during the dry season (July to October). Huge herds of elephant numbering up to 300, lion and other wild animals all flock south from the Serengeti to the park in search of water and food. There is also a vast array of birdlife in this region as well as old gnarled baobabs offering a real sense of Africa. In fact, the beauty of Tarangire is that it is in season when the migration has passed through the Serengeti - meaning you can enjoy a world-class safari whenever you visit Tanzania.
