"No one can return from the Serengeti unchanged, for tawny lions will forever prowl our memory and great herds throng our imaginations." - George Schaller
Open grassy plains filled with roaming predators scouting out ever vulnerable prey - it's the stereotype of the Serengeti and it's true! This enormous national park, along with the Masai Mara, plays host to The Great Wildebeest Migration and offers great viewing at any time of the year.
The Annual Wildebeest and Zebra Migration is essentially the movement of thousands of animals across the grassy plains of East Africa in search of food and water as the seasons change. There is no start or finish as such but we commonly say the migration goes from the Serengeti Plains in a northwesterly direction. The exact timing and route of the migration changes from year to year - depending on the rains. Most people come to witness thousands of animals galloping across the plains and fording raging rivers with crocodiles in wait!
