Nestled between the turquoise Lake Tanganyika and green forested Mahale Mountains, Greystoke Mahale offers one of the best chimpanzee experiences in the world as well as a fantastic secluded beach location. Accommodation is in 6 secluded bandas built from thatch, reed and occasional boat parts and all face the expanse of the great lake. Although activities are centred around the chimpanzees, there are also many water based activities such as snorkeling, fishing and boating.
With a maximum of only 14 guests the service is personal and of an exemplary standard. The food is tasty and plentiful and with your days full, you will certianly be hungry! Each evening begins with a round of drinks overlooking the stunning lake where the days sighting are discussed and the new day looked forward to. With it's unique secluded position in this remote and forgotten area of Tanzania, Greystoke Mahale is one destination the well informed travellor would do well to include in their Tanzanian intinerary.
Although the setting may make you think otherwise, the primary reason for visiting Greystoke Mahale is the Chimpanzees and not the beautiful lake, forests and mountains. Those are considered a bonus!
Each day of your stay here will include a chimp trek through the forest, although chimp sightings are not guaranteed they are very likely and it is only on the rare occasion that they are missed. Be aware though that the time and distance for each chimp trek vary according to how far the chimps themselves have moved, this is not an outing to the zoo! Chimp trekking is a physical affair and if you are not game, you would have a better time on the Serengeti or relaxing in the Ngorongoro crater.
