Comfortable country retreat in historical KwaZulu-Natal

With a magnificent view of the Spioenkop Nature Reserve and the Spionkop Hill, Three Trees Lodge represents different things for different people: for some it’s a luxury retreat with comfortable and secluded rooms and glorious views; for others it’s a nature and safari lodge run by a family with game guiding and safari lodges deep in their blood; yet still for others Three Trees Lodge offers a moving depiction of the tumultuous clashes between the Zulus, the Dutch settlers known as Boers and the imperial power of Britain at the turn of the 19th century.

Against the rather picturesque backdrop of the Drakensberg Mountains, guided tours offer evocative rendering of the Anglo-Zulu war and the Anglo-Boer wars that shaped modern South Africa. Far from glamourising the bloody clashes, the tours relive the experiences of men on both sides in the spirit of understanding and reconciliation for future generations.

If the gory past does not appeal there is plenty else to do worthy of a full two-night stay at Three Trees Lodge including horse trails, hiking, nature walks, guided bush walks (tracking white rhino), Drakensberg Mountain hikes, birding and mountain biking.
