Known for their incredible diversity of habitats and wild inhabitants the game parks and reserves in Kwazulu Natal should not be overlooked in favour of those parks in Mpumalanga, such as the Kruger. Consider that in Kwazulu Natal the weather is milder, the grasses are greener and the lodges are on a par as is the game viewing. Couple that with the fact that the safari experience is relatively underutilized by tourists and you have the makings of the perfect destination for an exclusive safari experience.
Reserves such as the Hluhluwe Umfolozi National Park are overshadowed by the Kruger National Park Destinations and Sabi Sand Game Reserve, yet neither of those places would have any black rhino at all if it wasn't for Hluhluwe. Some years ago the black rhino population of virtually every park in southern Africa was zero, niks, nada. Except for Hluhluwe which maintained its population and it is from here and here alone that black rhino were reintroduced throughout southern Africa. Nearby is the spectacular. These various habitats make for a place of diverse game viewing, where you are likely to see almost all the Big Five, maybe even the leopard.
The nearby Lake St Lucia is a World Heritage Site, with the greatest population of crocodiles in Africa and Makatana Bay Lodge and Hluhluwe River Lodge make great places from which to explore the area. So not only is Kwazulu Natal a great choice for a safari, but there are few better places to combine a bush and beach holiday!
