Niki’s Best of South Africa Self-drive Holiday

Discover Kruger, Cape Town and the Garden Route

Kruger National Park, Cape Town and the Garden Route are the iconic holiday destinations in South Africa and Niki’s Best of South Africa Holiday takes you to all three in a comfortable and affordable 18-day self-drive holiday. Here’s what Niki says of her dream South African holiday:

"This tour showcases the highlights of South Africa. From the busy-ness and hype of Johannesburg city, you can escape to the countryside where canyons and savannah collide. After one day in the area of Hazyview along the Panorama Route, you will make your way to the Kruger National Park. The safari lodges are in the best private game reserves in the country, namely the Thornybush Game Reserve and Sabi Sand Game Reserve, giving you the ultimate safari experience of a life-time! You could be seeing cheetah, leopard and lion on a daily basis.

"After the thrill of your safari, you will head to the beautiful mother city of South Africa - the mountains, wine farms and beaches of Cape Town! The tour continues along the Garden Route (after a stop in Hermanus to see the whales if you’re in the right season from July to November) via Route 62 to Oudtshoorn and to the coastal town of Knysna.  En route from Knysna to Port Elizabeth, you stop at the Tsitsikamma Forest which is a stunning natural area!  End the tour in Port Elizabeth to fly to Johannesburg and say good bye to our beautiful country!"

Arrive Johannesburg International and transfer to the Peermont Metcourt Suites about five minutes away to rest and prepare for your road trip north to Kruger Park via the Panoramic Route.

The Peermont Metcourt Suites are inside the sprawling Emperor’s Palace Entertainment and Business Complex so there is no shortage of dining and activity options during your stay at this bright and swanky location.

Meals: breakfast

Day 2 - 3: Perry's Bridge Hollow, Kruger Surrounds and Panorama Route

Fly from Johannesburg to the Kruger-Mpumulanga Airport where you will collect your hired car and drive about 45 minutes to Perry’s Bridge Hollow in Hazyview. Hazyview is the heart of the scenic Panoramic Route formed by the escarpment leading down to the Kruger National Park area.

From Perry’s there are wonderful day trips to waterfalls, nature reserves, hiking trails and numerous family outings including animal rehabilitation centres, a Shangaan cultural evening and an elephant interaction programme.

Meals: breakfast

Day 3 - 5: Chapungu Luxury Tented Camp, Kruger National Park

Drive about an hour north into the Kruger National Park and make way for the Thornybush Private Game Reserve, which forms part of the Greater Kruger Park.

Being in a private game reserve gives you exclusive access to the same amazing game viewing as the public reserve with some serious bonuses: off-road traversing in open-topped vehicles; open-sided vehicles; night time game drives; walking safaris; and almost no other signs of human existence in the park.

Spend two nights in Thornybush Luxury Tented Camp where optional activities include two game drives a day - early morning and afternoon/evening - a mid-morning bush walk; stargazing; al fresco dinners; bush breakfasts and a wellness spa.

Meals: full board including local drinks and scheduled activities

Day 5 - 8: Arathusa Safari Lodge, Kruger National Park

Drive south to the Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve - another exclusive asset of the Greater Kruger Park and a magnificent game viewing and safari destination.

Spend three days on safari at Arathusa with exclusive access to one of Africa’s finest game parks. As with Thornybush during the preceding days, predator sightings are frequent and you are almost assured of seeing lion, leopard and elephant - often in a single game drive.

Meals: full board including local drinks and scheduled activities

Day 8 - 12: Blackheath Lodge, Cape Town

Fly from Kruger Airport to Cape Town and transfer to Blackheath Lodge in Sea Point on Cape Town's Atlantic Seaboard, near the V&A Waterfront. Spend four days exploring the Cape in your hired car ticking off the big attractions: Table Mountain, Robben Island, V&A Waterfront, Kirstenbosch, Cape Point and the beautiful beaches and wine farms all around you.

Of course there are many other attractions including nature reserves, hiking trails, ocean excursions, galleries, museums and a variety of shopping precincts. You could spend a lifetime exploring Cape Town and still find daily surprises.

Meals: breakfast

Day 12 - 13: Harbour House Hotel, Hermanus

Hermanus, the whale-watching capital of South Africa, is about an hour and a half along the Garden Route. Take the scenic coastal route and arrive in time for lunch overlooking Walker Bay and, if you’re travelling between the months of July and November, keep your whale-watching eyes peeled for Southern Right Whales.

Walk along the cliff path for dramatic bay views and the opportunity of coming within a few metres of a whale.

Meals: breakfast

Day 13 - 14: La Plume Guesthouse, Oudtshoorn

Drive through the scenic Route 62 over mountains and into the semi-arid interior of the Karoo. Oudsthoorn is the main town in this vast region serving livestock farms, wildlife reserves and a steady stream of visitors heading off the beaten track.

The farm is a working ostrich and alfalfa operation and your hosts take delight in showing you the country life. Cango Caves is a must-see attraction nearby and the town itself holds plenty of charm for all who pass through.

Meals: breakfast

Day 14 - 18: The Lofts, Knysna

The Lofts is situated in the coastal town of Knysna along the Western Cape's popular Garden Route, only about a five hour drive from Cape Town.

The hotel is just a few feet away from the Knysna Lagoon and provides stunning views of its path towards the Indian Ocean. And it is just a short walk from the town centre and hubbub of Knysna with its collection of cafes, bars, restaurants and quaint buildings.

Meals: breakfast

Day 18: Departure

A short drive further east takes you to Port Elizabeth Airport where you can drop off your hired car and board a flight for Johannesburg or Cape Town to connect with your flight home.
