Day 1 - 5: Londolozi Pioneer Camp, Kruger National Park
Arrive in Africa at the impressive Johannesburg International and transfer by scheduled light aircraft to Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve, which forms part of the Greater Park.
Spend four nights in luxury and seclusion at Londolozi Pioneer Camp in the private concession and an almost guaranteed leopard sighting - among the other famous Big 5 animals and a host of plains game, birds, plants, insects, stars... basically the entire spectrum of African wilderness.
Meals: full board including local drinks
Day 5 - 8: Tongabezi Safari Lodge, Victoria Falls
Transfer by road to the Kruger Airport and fly direct into Livingstone on the Zambian side of Victoria Falls for three nights. Tongabezi is luxury safari lodge on the Zambezi upriver from the Victoria Falls and inside the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park. Accommodation is in individual suites, spaced far apart along the river beneath a dense canopy of teak.
Explore one of the World’s Seven Natural Wonders and the countless activities on land, water and in the air: sunset cruises, game drives, lion walks, elephant-back safaris, canoeing safaris, scenic flights over the waterfall gorge, white water rafting and of course the terrifying bungee jumping and its bizarre incarnations.
Meals: full board including local drinks
Day 8 - 12: The Cape Grace, Cape Town
Fly from Livingstone direct to Cape Town, collect your hired wheels and make your way to the Cape Grace Hotel in the V&A Waterfront. Driving in Cape Town and South Africa is simple, safe and convenient. Plus you get the advantage of freedom to go where you please for however long you please.
The Cape Grace is an elegant five star classic hotel on a private marina in the Waterfront harbour. Surrounded by water and pleasure boats and with a view of the city and Table Mountain looming large behind you can’t help but to enjoy being at the centre of this pleasant universe.
Explore the peninsula taking care to include the cable car ride up Table Mountain and a visit to Cape Point in your plans. There are many excellent hikes, wine farms, galleries, museums, shops, restaurants and events in Cape Town so some pre-planning of your time here will be worthwhile.
Meals: breakfast
Day 12 - 14: Birkenhead House, Whale Route
After a few nights in Cape Town, head out of town along the coast to Hermanus - the focal point of the Whale Route in Walker Bay for some of the best land-based whale watching in the world (between July and November with a peak in October). Thanks to a steep shelf you can get to within a few metres of a southern right whale from the cliff’s edge: an incredible experience and we think the Big 5 should include a whale to become the Big 6.
If Hermanus is the high point of the Whale Route, Birkenhead House is without doubt the high point in Hermanus (indeed most of South Africa). This small, exclusive boutique hotel is perched on a rocky outcrop with wrap-around views of the bay and the luxury and exclusivity is supreme.
Meals: full board including local drinks
Day 14 - 16: La Residence, Franschhoek
From the Whale Route you drive inland to the Cape Winelands town of Franschhoek - a picture-book village in a valley covered with vineyards and distinctly Francophile airs. La Résidence is the companion hotel to Birkenhead House and the founding member of hotel group going by the name of The Royal Portfolio. Enough said?
Spend two days hiking or cycling through wine farms and nature reserves or on horseback, tasting wines and enjoying dinners in some of the country’s best restaurants.
Meals: breakfast
Day 16: Departure
Cape Town International Airport is about an hour’s drive from Franschhoek and the airport serves several major long haul destinations making it an easy departure day for you. Well, as easy as can be after such an incredible journey.
