Sea-spray waters the dense foliage sprouting from the rock face, which ends at the paved walkway and manicured lawns that lead up to the expansive white property of The Marine Hotel, facing Hermanus’ Walker Bay. Just beneath the surface of the rolling Indian Ocean waters, one of the largest densities of the Great White Shark shares the area with the Southern Right Whale’s breeding and mating ground. Unsurprisingly, Walker Bay is considered one of the top places in the world to whale-watch and shark-cage dive.
Hermanus has grown from being a small-fishing village to a popular tourist destination for whale and shark enthusiasts. The multitude of valleys, lush greenery in the area and temperate climate has also created appropriate conditions for wine production. As such, visitors will find an array of wine farms scattered across the area – particularly in the Hemel-en-Aarde (Heaven & Earth) valley. Photographic enthusiasts will be delighted to find themselves in part of the Cape Floristic Region, where the area is overflowing with diverse and endemic plant life, most famous of all of these being the prolific fynbos.
With plenty to see and do in this charming seaside town, the historic Marine Hotel separated from the ocean only by the cliffs of Walker Bay offers guests five-star accommodation in any of their 40 elegantly-decorated rooms and suites. Owner-run hospitality, accompanied by world-class service and the magnificent ocean views of Walker Bay make The Marine the ideal host year-round. Guests can enjoy a scenic stroll to town on the wheelchair-friendly Cliff Path that extends from the hotel to the village square, or dine at either of the restaurants at The Marine and enjoy a cocktail in The Sun Lounge with expansive views of the bay.
