Situated on a small hill, only the apexes of the thatched roofs visible among the trees, Kichaka Lodge looks out over a hippo dam in the Kichaka Private Game Reserve in South Africa's temperate Eastern Cape. Ten suites dot the hillside and each is appointed with hotel-like luxury and amenities: full en suite bathrooms, private decks, underfloor heating, air conditioning, heated plunge pools, lounge, bar fridge, internet, satellite TV, 24-hour room service and direct-dial telephones. If that all sounds a bit too far removed from the virgin bush that rolls around outside, fear not for the floor-to-ceiling sliding doors open directly onto the deck and the bush.
The main lodge has a large lounge and dining area, an upstairs library and reading room, massive game viewing terraces and a pool that all but joins the waterhole below. Food and wine lovers are well catered for with an experienced cellar master on call and five-star silver service at hand. Relax with a glass of chilled white wine and watch animals make their way to and from the waterhole, while the attentive staff see to your every need. And at the end of another great day, you can retreat to the comfort and luxury of your elegant room.
The Eastern Cape is fast becoming popular for malaria-free big game safaris. The temperate climate and gently undulating hills lend themselves to game viewing safaris – fewer trees, no malaria, and better vantage points. Kichaka Lodge provides five star luxury in a private reserve stocked with rhino, cheetah, lion, elephant, buffalo, hyena, hippo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and many species of antelope and a host of fascinating nocturnal creatures. You can spot the Big Five on Safari here and the rangers will point out much more, making for an exceptional and exclusive wilderness experience.
