Schoone Oordt means 'beautiful haven' in German and is a charming country house in the historic farming town of Swellendam, the third oldest settlement in South Africa. It is just over 2 hours drive from Cape Town and a few hours from Knysna and Plettenberg Bay, making it an ideal stopover on your Garden Route adventure. But it offers so much more, with majestic mountains, nature reserves, national parks and river valleys all within touching distance of the town itself. The house itself was built in 1853 and has been recently refurbished and renovated to offer refined luxury and elegance in a country setting. Space is certainly not an issue, with over 5000 square metres of lush gardens, manicured lawns, secret woodland glades and blooming roses whichever way you look. Relax beside the sparkling swimming pool or tranquil fountains and kick off each day with a hearty breakfast in the open-air conservatory.

There is a well-appointed bathroom with over-sized showers, double basins and bath and each suite has a private patio where you can relax with your loved one. And for couples, the honeymoon cottage offers the utmost in privacy and luxury in a secluded corner of the garden, with all creature comforts and some unexpected surprises too!

There is no need to rush your Garden Route adventure - you're on holiday after all. And Swellendam really is an ideal stopover, about halfway between Cape Town and George, just a few hours drive from each destination. It is a perfect halfway house on your way up or down country. And Schoone Oordt is the ideal guesthouse, reasonably priced, private and comfortable in a serene and stunning setting. At the foot of the majestic Langeberg Mountains, hiking is on your doorstep, as are the Marloth Nature Reserve and Bontebok National Park. Head down to the sea and De Hoop Nature Reserve, with its rich collection of birdlife and Cape Agulhas, the southernmost tip of Africa and there are many wine estates nearby. The options are endless.
