One of the oldest wine farms in South Africa, Spier's timeline goes all the way back to 1692. It combines this long-standing heritage with a vibrant, modern spirit that makes it one of the more unique destinations in the Cape Winelands. The hotel consists of a village of rolling lawns and spacious rooms alongside the Eerste River and around private courtyards, each with its own swimming pool.
Voted in 2011 in the Condé Nast Traveler World Saver Award as the top international destination ‘Doing it All’, there's plenty to see and do here. But let's start with the wine... The winery is one of the most awarded in the country, letting guests enjoy wine tasting, with award-winning wine that you can pair with delicious food at Spier’s new tasting venue, on the banks of a dam, overlooking the Helderberg mountains.
Good and Green
Spier is committed to doing the right thing for the environment and communities, and is renowned for its responsible tourism approach. The farm has been recognised by various external organisations including Fair Trade in Tourism (FTTSA) and the Wine Industry Ethical Trade Association (WIETA). Spier is a Champion member of the Biodiversity & Wine Initiative (BWI), and the cellar has ISO 22000 certification, is Fair Trade accredited, organically certified and follows the Integrated Production of Wine (IPW) criteria. Spier recycles 100% of its wastewater, and over 80% of its solid waste. They are dedicated to supporting local communities through the treepreneur project, encouraging people in impoverished communities to grow trees in exchange for essential goods. Spier also supports Eagle Encounters, a bird-of-prey rehabilitation, conservation, education and eco-tourism project.
Enjoy a picnic from Eight to Go on the lawns or a wholesome farm-to-table eating experience at Eight Restaurant. When it comes to food at Spier, they really go out of their way to ensure produce used is local, natural and organic wherever possible, with some food grown on the Spier farm itself. Stroll around the grounds or tour the vineyards on Segways. Meet the birds of prey at Eagle Encounters or support local crafters at the Craft Market. Spier's Restaurant and Wine Bar make for a great place to enjoy a glass of vino or cocktail or two. There are many great places in and around Cape Town that offer something for the art fundis and Spier is no exception, boasting one of South Africa's most extensive collections of contemporary art.
