When to Visit Cape Town

There's never a wrong time to visit Cape Town

Cape Town is busy throughout the year. The low season is getting smaller and smaller as more visitors choose to combine time in Cape Town with a few days on safari or in Victoria Falls.

The most popular time to visit Cape Town is from November through to March. Keep in mind, however, that the shoulder months (that's tourism lingo) of October and April can be fabulous and uncrowded.

Cape Winters (May – August) are notorious for cold, windy, rainy weather, but in reality the miserable days are interspersed with glorious sunny days that rival the best summer days in Europe! Winter in Cape Town is known in Rhino Africa as "secret season" because of the amazing deals that can be found. As long as you stay for a week or more, you’re bound to have at least a few days of gorgeous weather. It's not only cheaper, but you'll be far from the madding crowds - Cape Town all to yourself - magic.

Cape Town: Season by Season

Winter
May – September
Cape Town is nice and quiet and offers some great winter specials. Enjoy cold days, exploring the Western Cape. At night enjoy the Cape Dutch Architecture, snuggled up by a log fire sipping a delicious Cabernet Sauvignon and tasting some of Africa's best beef and game dishes.

Spring
September – October
The wild flowers of Namaqualand and the West Coast are one of nature’s greatest spectacles, with bright spring blooms emerging in their millions from the seemingly barren semidesert. Several of the region’s towns hold major flower festivals.

The annual whale migration of Southern Right Whales takes place along the coast from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town and beyond the West Coast. In Cape Town and Hermanus they come very close to the shore, giving land lubbers a great view of these graceful leviathans.

Summer
November – March
From November to March, Cape Town becomes party central! Beautiful people with beautiful bodies in one of the most spectacular cities in the world. The beaches, bars and restaurants are packed as temperatures soar and everyone winds down for the holiday season.

Autumn
March – May
The winelands and vineyards turn autumnal brown! Listen out for the Cape Town Jazz Festival. Autumn is a great time to visit Cape Town as the number of visitors drops but the days are still hot and sunny and the notorious southeasterly wind disappears. In April, the Two Oceans Marathon draws 8,000 runners for perhaps the most scenic race in the world, a grueling 56km course that circumnavigates part of the Cape Peninsula.
