Explore the history & natural wonders of False Bay

False Bay forms a long, swooping curve on the southern Cape coastline and is dotted with picturesque seaside hamlets, looming crags and cliffs, white sandy beaches and turquoise waters. Once a misleading sight for mariners who thought that False Bay was Table Bay - hence its name – today it draws sun worshippers and beach bums.

The area is littered with the multi-coloured beach huts of Muizenberg, the vibrant pulse of Kalk Bay’s restaurants and bars, and the resplendent view of Simon’s Town Harbour seen from the coastal road as it rounds into the bay. Many travellers visit False Bay via train from Cape Town, stopping off at Simon’s Town to embark along the Historical Mile Walk. Its museums relay the naval spirit of the Cape, bringing life to a rich maritime history. Nearby Boulders Beach is home to a penguin colony overrun with tuxedoed birds that visitors can observe and swim with.

This is a whale’s world from June—November when the southern right whales make their slow migration while May—December sees the ocean teeming with humpback whales. Around Seal Island, the waters are alive with seals and great white sharks. Nature reserves, such as Cape of Good Hope, Rondevlei and Silvermine, play host to the region’s indigenous fynbos.
