The Rhino Africa Kruger/Sabi Sand expedition Last month a group of 'Rhino Africans' donned their woolly hats and set off to the Kruger to experience the natural tranquility of the bush. Most people head to the Kruger National Park in Summer (Sept to March) but we found the winter experience just as pleasurable. The mornings and evenings were chilly (hence the woolly hats!) but the days were beautifully warm and sunny, especially compared to stormy Cape Town from whence we had come! The Rhino travel expedition had a fair number of Kruger initiates so the mood was festive and we bounced around like children awaiting Santa's stocking. After arriving at Johannesburg International Airport we hired a car and drove the easily navigated route to the Park. We arrived at Shishangeni Lodge in the south-eastern part of the Kruger National Park to find elephants munching on Acacia trees just next to the main lodge! The following two days were spent in the Sabi Sand Reserve which shares fenceless borders with the Kruger National Park. The Sabi Sand experience is a far more exclusive one and the reserve is especially famous for their BIG cats! We saw mating lion's (a rare sighting!) and leopards so close we were mesmerised by the wild power in their eyes. My personal favourite was sitting quietly in our open landrover amidst a herd of elephants grazing in the morning sunlight.
Our first night in the Sabi Sand was spent at Richard Branson's Ulusaba Private Game Reserve. Sundowners at Rock Lodge afforded us spectacular views of the plains as it is set high up on a rocky outcrop. The magnetism of dinner after a long day lured us down to Ulusaba's Safari Lodge for dinner and rest.
On our final night, we enjoyed the quiet and exclusive tranquility of Lion Sands Private Game Reserve. On arrival we were whisked off to indulge in Moet & Chardon and strawberries at one of the beautifully situated and private Ivory Lodge suites. Elephants strolled past on cue as the sun bid farewell and we all sighed at the thought of returning to laptops, mobile phones and emails.
The Lion Sands team made sure we sent home in style and we enjoyed great wine and delicious food in the Boma (outdoor area with BIG fire) for dinner. The Kruger National Park is one of those places that captures your imagination and ignites a deep passion for Africa. The memories are ones that linger - even for us locals.Read our detailed itinerary |
