The Exeter Self-drive Safari goes through scenic mountains before descending into the lowveld of the Kruger Park where Africa’s big game lies ready to pounce in front of your camera. This four-day self-drive safari gives you freedom to explore the region and is an affordable alternative to the
luxury fly-in safari.
- Mountain air, rivers, forests, views and cosy log fires
- Big game, predators, plains herds and lesser-known fascinations
- Game drives, night drives, walking safaris, birding and stargazing
- Luxury lodges in spectacular settings
- Flexible tour that can be modified to suit your requirements

Day 1: Mpumalanga
Collect your hired car from Joburg Airport and set off on the four-hour drive to Mpumalanga. The route is simple and the roads are well sign-posted. The first half of the journey will disappear in a rather uneventful yawn; the second half will rise sheer into the clouds and take you through spectacular mountain passes and scenic routes.
Accommodation: Chose between Cybele Lodge; Lone Creek Country Hotel; Blue Mountain; Timmoon or Dawson's Game and Trout Farm
Meals: breakfast
Day 2 and 3: Exeter Lodge
A gentle two to three hours' drive will get you to Exeter Private Game Reserve. Aim to arrive at the Lodge by 1pm, in time for a sumptuous lunch, a light doze, a dip in the pool and your first game drive in the afternoon.
The Private reserve and concession has many advantages over the national parks in South Africa: vehicles need not be covered; rangers can follow animals off the roads; you can go on bush walks; and the night drives, sleep-outs and dinners in the bush are invigorating. Above all, you and a handful of other guests will have exclusive access to an enormous and pristine game reserve.
Your early morning game drives, bush walks and sunset safaris will be interrupted by exquisite meals, rejuvenating spa treatments or poolside dozes. Spend the next three days in the blissful routine of eating, sleeping and various wilderness activities.
Accommodation: Exeter Leadwood Lodge; Exeter Dulini Lodge; Exeter River Lodge or Kirkman's Kamp
Meals: full board including all game activities
Day 4: Joburg
An early morning game drive and one last breakfast will wrap up your African safari. Drive back to Joburg Airport via some more scenic mountain passes; the trip should take between five and six hours.
Note: Although this is a three-night safari, you can shorten or lengthen it depending on your time and budget. And what's more, you can add this to an itinerary that goes to
Victoria Falls, the
Garden Route,
Cape Town... you name it.
