D E T A I L E D   I T I N E R A R Y

Day by Day Outline

Day 1: Arusha to Marangu Gate
After breakfast your guide will brief you at your hotel on your Mount Kilimanjaro Trek before you depart to Marangu Gate. Begin trekking through the rain forests, for 3-4 hours to Mandara Hut (2750m).

Accommodation: Mandara Hut
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 2: Marangu to Horombo Hut
After breakfast, leave the glades of the rain forest and continue trekking into open rolling moorland. A more challenging day, it is about a 5 hour trek to the Horombo Huts at 3807m.

Day 3: Horombo to Mawenzi Hut
At Horombo Hut, you will find a virtual village of huts inhabited by fellow hikers and their respective guides, cooks and porters. From Horombo Hut, the path to Mawenzi Hut is a very gradual ascent and is vital to successfully, efficiently and safely acclimatise yourself to the altitude. The trek here usually consists of journeying past Zebra Rocks en route to Mawenzi Hut.

Day 4: Mawenzi to Kibo Hut
After a good night's rest, trek past the last water point to reach Kibo saddle, a broad desert zone between the two peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi. Kibo Hut (4725m) is reached in 5-6 hours.

Day 5: Kibo to Uhuru Peak and back to Horombo Hut
The start for the summit is made just after midnight. The steepest part of the route is to Gillman's point (5700m) 5-6 hours. A further one and a half hours walk to Uhuru Peak (5895m) and you are standing at Africa's highest point! After the group photos and jubilation, you begin your descent, heading back to Horomobo Hut.

Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate to Arusha
The day is spent descending to the Marangu Gate. From the base of Mount Kilimanjaro, you are transferred to Arusha which is the starting point for northern Tanzania Safaris and the halfway point of Cape Town to Cairo.
