Rwanda and Uganda are both beautiful countries, and it is in their rainforests and volcanic mountain slopes that one is able to come face to face with the silver-back Gorilla and the intelligent stare of a chimpanzee.
Gorilla or Chimpanzee Tracking in Rwanda and Uganda (as well as the Mahale Mountains in Tanzania for chimps) is a life-changing event, an experience not to be missed. Despite its troubled past, Rwanda’s remarkable recovery has resulted in the opening of its tourism doors to international travelers wanting specifically to spot gorillas and chimpanzees. Rwanda and Uganda are both beautiful countries with rolling green hills, interesting cultures, a wide variety of wildlife and of course, along with the Democratic Republic of Congo, are the last places on Earth where you can see the spectacular Mountain Gorilla in its natural habitat.

Although there are several subspecies of gorillas, the mountain gorilla is the most rare and the most tracked. In the forested slopes of the Virunga Mountains in
Rwanda and
Uganda as well as
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest there are several habituated family groups that tolerate the presence of humans. Accompanied by trained guides you will head up into the heights of the mountains where you will get to spend time with these most fascinating of primates, an experience that will stay with you for the rest of your life!
There are several guidelines you will have to adhere to on a tracking tour to see either gorillas or chimpanzee and these are listed at the bottom of this page. In addition there are gorilla and chimpanzee permits issued by the tourism authorities of the host country. These are limited in number as only a certain number of people are allowed to visit the gorillas & chimpanzees in all areas. With the gorillas your time with them will be restricted to just one hour and the same is the case for some of the chimpanzee areas, although most allow you to stay with the chimps as long as you like...or as long as you can keep up!
